PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitor capable of preventing a paper breakage more accurately even under a bad condition of its installation. SOLUTION: This monitor has the following scheme and works as follows: the side edge face 1a of a wet paper 1 is irradiated with rays of a light 9a from a light source 9 and the reflected light 9b is caught by a camera 5 which is a microminiaturized one and completely covered with a camera box 10, which has a monitoring aperture 10a made of a transparent material and lying on a lens side 5a of the camera 5, the aperture 10a with its outer surface coated is prevented from mist staining by the aid of an air curtain 12a flowing from above downward, the air curtain 12a is formed by allowing the air continuously fed into the cover 11 to flow from an opening 11a along the outer surface of the aperture 10a; a color image obtained by the camera 5 is processed by an image processor 6 and then displayed on a monitoring TV 7, enabling the shift a peel point 3 to be monitored, thus enabling a machine abnormality leading to a paper breakage to be predicted in advance.
