PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for designing a narrow specific band optical filter not only having selection characteristic to exclude disturbance signals but adding no linear distortion to desired signals passing the filter, and to realize the filter. SOLUTION: The transmission and reflection characteristics of the optical filter are defined by a Hurwitz polynomial. The Hurwitz polynomial is developed into a standardized low pass filter of a specific electric circuit and the filter is subjected to the equivalent conversion to determine the structure of the optical filter. When the wavelength of the light signal transmitting the filter is denotedλ0 , the layer structure contains at least one pair of two layers adjacent to each other and having different film thicknesses the sum of which is equal to the electric length ofλ0 /2 in first reflecting mirror layers, second reflecting mirror layers, connecting layers or the series of these layers.
