PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultra-high speed recording special purpose medium for recording optical information having high crystallization velocity, excellent recording signal jitter characteristics and excellent repeating overwrite characteristics and to provide a method for recording and erasing the same. SOLUTION: The medium for recording optical information records and erases an information signal in a reference clock period of 15 ns or less. The medium comprises a phase change recording layer made of an alloy which contains (Sb1-x Gex )1-y Iny (wherein 0.01<=x<=0.25, 0.05<=y<=0.40) as a main component and provided on a substrate.
