A table saw such as a chop saw, a miter saw, compound miter saw or a sliding compound miter saw that is provided with a laser arbor alignment system. An opaque shield (30) or transparent shield (30) having an opaque mask (58) blocks the laser beam (48) from being projected into a range of normal operator eye positions (62). One or more openings (56) in the shield (30) or opaque mask (58) provide a sight line on a workpiece initially. As the saw (12) is moved into engagement with the workpiece (18), the shield (30) is pivoted away from the workpiece (18) and a solid laser line is projected on the workpiece (18).
