PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rod-like member of the different outside diameter in the longitudinal direction and having the excellent reliability in strength, and a manufacturing method capable of easily manufacturing the rod-like member. SOLUTION: The rod-like member A1 comprises a plurality of cylindrical component pieces 10, 20 and 30 of the predetermined length which are arranged in one row in the longitudinal direction and joined with each other. In the first and second component pieces 10 and 20 adjacent to each other, the outside diameter of an end part of the first component piece 10 is larger than the outside diameter of an end part of the second component piece 20. The end part of the first component piece 10 and the end part of the second component piece 20 are butted to each other so as to provide a step on the outer circumferential surface of each component piece. By joining a butt part 3 by the friction stirring and joining in this butted condition (a joined part W), the outer circumferential surface of the butt part 3 is tapered, and the first component piece 10 and the second component piece 20 are integrated and joined with each other. |
