PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for calculating the fractional exposure of a black-and-white photosensitive material in order to keep the quality of an image to develop constant. SOLUTION: In a processing system consisting of a fixing stage and an in-lime silver recovery unit, the mass of silver recovered by the silver recovery unit is judged, and a first approximate value for the fractional exposure of the photographic material is calculated according to the judged mass, and then a second approximate value for the fractional exposure (θ) of the photographic material is calculated by using the first approximate value as an input to an iterative process. Thereby, the fractional exposure of the photographic material can be calculated without using a silver sensor.
