PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a specific type of cleaning apparatus for ballast, which is enhanced in sifting performance, and can avoid high structural costs, and to provide a cleaning method for ballast using the cleaning apparatus. SOLUTION: The cleaning apparatus 1 for ballast of a track 7 includes a first machine frame 2, and a second machine frame 4 connected to the first machine frame 2 by means of an articulated coupling device 3 and follows the former with respect to an operating direction of the cleaning apparatus 1. Each of the machine frames 2, 4 can move on the track by means of track bogies 5 arranged at both ends thereof. Further, the machine frames are provided with mutually independent clearing chains 12, 19 and track lifts 13, 20, respectively. In implementation of cleaning, first the track 7 is raised in the region of the first clearing chain 12, and the track is temporarily laid on the region, and thereafter it is raised again in the region of the second clearing chain 19.
