PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shaft excavator capable of making widening excavation for widening in the horizontal direction and being efficiently excavated even if it is a shaft having a large section. SOLUTION: A vertically pivoting boom 6 is mounted on an operatable swivel base 3 swinging on a traveling truck 2, and a rotational excavation head 22 having a conical trapezoid is put downward on the front end of the boom 6 so as to enable it to oscillate in front and behind by a tilt driving mechanism 8. A plurality of picks are spirally arranged and are projected to the lower surface and the circumferential surface of the rotational excavation head 22. The ground can be excavated in the vertical direction by the rotational excavation head 22, at the same time, the widening excavation can be made in front and behind by oscillating the rotational excavation head 22 in front and behind by the tilt driving mechanism 8, and the boom 6 is rotated with the rotation of the operatable swivel base 3 to enable the widening excavation to sideways carry out by the rotational excavation head 22.
