PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulation element driving system which is capable of driving an optical modulation element digitally and, as a result, is capable dispensing with a D/A converter and also capable of eliminating cutoff adjustment and which has high picture quality and high reliability and whose cost is low and to provide a projection system using the system. SOLUTION: This optical modulation element driving system has modulation signal generating means 51 to 55, 61 to 63 generating a modulation signal for driving digitally an optical modulation element (PLV) 1 at least with a pulse width modulation(PWM) at the time of scanning a modulated light from the optical modulation element (PLV) which has a piezoelectric body 2 which is provided with a reflecting surface 3 and is constituted so that an incident light is reflected or diffracted on the reflecting surface 3 by the inverse piezoelectric effect of the piezoelectric body 2 and this projection system uses the driving system.
