PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing 3,3,3- trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropionic acid which is an effective intermediate for an optically active medicine and an optically active agrochemical. SOLUTION: A method for optical resolution of 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2- methylpropionic acid by adding an arbitrarily chosen amount of an optically active amine to a solution obtained by dissolving 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2- methylpropionic acid in a diastereomer salt forming solvent, forming the diastereomer salt and recovering the deposited diastereomer salt by separation, and a method for effective purification of diastereomer salt by bringing the diastereomer salt into contact with an ether-based solvent or a mixed solvent containing the ether-based solvent as a main component, are provided.
