<p>The invention comprises compounds of the formula (Y)aM(R1)b(R)c wherein Y=RfCHOHCH2COO-, <FORM:1113525/C2/1> , RfCONH(CH2)xCOO- or <FORM:1113525/C2/2> Rf is CnF2n+1; M=Al, B, Cd, Ga, Mg, Th or Zn; R=H, halogen, benzyl, phenyl or a C1-C8 alkyl radical; R1 is phenyl or a C1-C8 alkyl radical; a=1 or 2; b and c are each 0, 1 or 2; a+b+c=the valence of M minus the valence of (Y)a; n is an integer of 1 to 20, and x is an integer of 1 to 10. They are prepared by reacting a fluorinated organic acid having the formula C2F2n+1CHOHCH2COOH or CnF2n+1CONH (CH2)2COOH with dimethyl benzyl aluminium, Ph3Al or a compound of the formula MR(R1)d, where M=Al, B, Cd, Ga, Mg, Th or Zn, R is H, halogen or a C1-C8 alkyl radical, R1 is a C1-C8 alkyl radical and d is an integer equal to the valence of M minus 1, in a molar ratio of 0.5:1 to 2:1 in the presence of a solvent such as heptane, ethylacetate or ether in the absence of O2 or water. The reactions of b -hydroxy b -perfluoroheptyl propionic acid and perfluorooctanoylglycine with Et2Zn (isoBu)3Al and Et3Al are described in the examples. The compounds of the invention may be used for the treatment of cellulosic, protinaceous and synthetic materials to render them resistant to soiling, staining and wetting by both water and oil (see Division D1).ALSO:Novel fluorine compounds (see Division C2) of the formula: (L)a M(R1)b (R)c wherein <FORM:1113525/D1-D2/1> halogen, benzyl, phenyl, or a C1 - C8 alkyl radical; R1 = phenyl or a C1 - C8 alkyl radical; a = 1 or 2; b and c are each 0, 1 or 2; a +b+c = the valence of M minus the valence of (Y)a; a is an integer of 1 to 20; and x is an integer of 1 to 10, are used for treating cellulosic, protineinaceous and synthetic materials to render them resistant to soiling staining and wetting by both water and oil borne materials.</p> |
