PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission based on the structure of a manual transmission for preventing elongation in the axial direction and improving its responsiveness at hydraulic control. SOLUTION: The vertical automatic transmission 10 comprises an input shaft 14 having driving gears 31a-36a, an output shaft 16 having driven gears 31b-36b engaging with the driving gears 31a-36a to form a speed change gear train, and change-over mechanisms 41-44 for change-over to the power transmitting speed change gear train. It is in a three-shaft construction with a driving shaft 17 connected to the output shaft 16 and a final speed reducer 51, which has a bypass clutch 24 arranged above the final speed reducer 51 for transmitting torque to the output shaft 16 while controlling the same during change-over and a starting clutch 13 for fastening or releasing an engine 11 to or from the input shaft 14. An oil pump 22 for driving the starting clutch 13 and the bypass clutch 24 is arranged above the final speed reducer 51 and near the bypass clutch 24. |
