A surface acoustic wave device includes a piezoelectric substrate made of LiTaO3 and at least one interdigital transducer provided on the substrate and having a plurality of electrode fingers. The polarization direction in at least one gap portion between electrode fingers of the at least one interdigital transducer is different from the polarization direction in other gap portions between electrode fingers on the same propagation path.
