PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine which is not only capable of suppressing the occurrence of mold, smells, yellowing, etc., in a basket and laundry by suppressing the propagation of microorganisms but is capable of maintaining a stable and effective sterilizing effect in long-term use as well. SOLUTION: This washing machine has a housing section 27 to house a sterilizing agent 34 consisting of a hydantoin halide compound for releasing a hypohalogenic acid by contacting water in a feed route 21 to the basket 6 and is constituted to supply water containing the hypohalogenic acid to the basket 6 by feeding the water into this housing section 27. The water containing the hypohalogenic acid is supplied to at least the final stroke after a washing stroke.
