A capacitor winding machine comprises two winding mandrels each consisting of a pair of semi-mandrels 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and 2, 2<SP>1</SP> individually retractable from the winding position, carriages 11 and 12 for feeding the electrode foils 13, 14 to the winding mandrels, clutch 36 and brake 35 for stopping the winding when a pre-set capacitance has been reached, and means for cutting the electrode foils and dielectric strips 5, 6 when winding is complete. The winding mandrels are driven by electromotor 39. The other moving parts, wherein the motion is translatory, are driven by compressed air or other fluid entering at 200 and acting on pistons (reference numerals prefixed by P) under the control of valves (reference numerals prefixed by E) the connections between the valves and pistons being shown only in part. Prior to the winding operation, foil carriages 11 and 12 are retracted to a position on which wire 23 from spools 22 is welded to each foil by means of electrodes 32, 33 and is severed to form leads. The leads may alternatively be attached during the winding operation by stopping the winding. As shown, the carriages are advanced to the winding position and when winding of the foils is complete, they are retracted to an intermediate position for cutting the foils with cutters 8 and 9. A pair of brushes contacting the foils during winding are connected to the input of a measurement bridge controlling brake 35 and clutch 36 to stop the winding at the pre-set capacitance. Mandrels 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are mounted on turret 130 rotatable through 180 degrees by rack 50 and gear-wheel 51 to interchange the positions of the mandrels. The foils and dielectric are wound on to the upper of the pairs of mandrels and, as shown in Fig. 2B, when winding is complete and the electrode foils have been cut, the upper pair 2, 21 are swung round to the lower position. The dielectric films 5, 6 now lie on the single semi-mandrel 1<SP>1</SP>, semi-mandrel 1 having been retracted during winding. Semi-mandrel 1 is brought into the winding position (Fig. 2C, not shown) the films between the mandrels are cut by cutter 8, the ends of the films are fused to the wound body and semi-mandrels 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are retracted to free the capacitor. Semimandrel 2<SP>1</SP> is immediately brought out again and the winding of the next capacitor is begun. A device 7 prevents unwinding of the roll between cutting and sealing. The whole operation is carried out automatically by a system of microswitches and relays actuated by the various moving parts.
