A method of producing an aluminium-base product, such as wire, includes casting the product and then hot-forming the product in its as-cast condition to elongate it by a factor of at least 20 and to destroy the as-cast grain structure. As shown, a wire is continuously cast in a mould formed by a grooved wheel 13 and a driven endless band 14, and is then rolled in the stands 17 of a continuous mill. A hot forging machine and a direct drill casting machine may alternatively be employed. The as-cast grain structure of the product is destroyed during hot-forming, by arranging that the product is deformed to a considerable degree perpendicularly to its axis. This can be effected by using a round-oval, or a triangular-triangular, pass sequence in the mill. |
