PURPOSE: A continuously variable transmission is provided to secure durability, to attempt simplification, and to improve power transmission performance. CONSTITUTION: In a continuously variable transmission, an input transmission gear(22) is disposed between an input gear(21) and intermediate gears(23,24), and a friction wheel(25) fixed to the intermediate gear makes driving force act on an outer peripheral friction wheel(37) vertically. Rotational force of the friction wheel is transmitted to an output gear(27) through the intermediate gear(24) and the output transmission gear. Continuously variable change of speed is possible by changing the ratio of circumference of the friction wheel and the outer peripheral friction wheel by a controlling plate(38), with making the gear ratio of input gear and the output gear different. The acting direction of rotational force is not parallel to the friction surface but the rotational force acts vertically with the friction surface and therefore, power transmission is performed with small friction force. Therefore, durability is secured and the power transmission performance is improved.
