PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet transport device which makes the device compact, prevents the invasion of dust and the like and facilitates takeoff of an original. SOLUTION: The sheet transport device is provided with a reading means for transporting and reading an original 21, an original insertion port 12 for inserting the original 21 which is to be read by the reading means, an original placing stand (original supporting means) 4 fitted to a device casing so that it can be rotated near the original insertion port 12. The original placing stand 4 has a projecting shape. The device is also provided with an original discharge port 7 for discharging the original 21 which has been read by the reading means and an original discharge tray (discharged original supporting means) fitted to the device casing so that it can be rotated near the original discharge port 7. The original discharge tray 2 has a recessed shape. When the original placing stand 4 and the original discharge tray 2 are rotated and closed, the projecting shape of the original placing stand 4 is engaged wit the recessed part of the original discharge tray 2.
