PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording method by which an error ratio is reduced and multilevel recording can be realized. SOLUTION: This optical recording method is for irradiating a recording layer 12 in an optical recording medium 10 with a laser beam condensed by an objective lens to form a recording mark. When the numerical aperture of the objective lens is NA, and the wavelength of the laser beam is λ, a virtual recording cell 40 whose unit length H satisfies 0.10×(λ/NA)<H<1.00×(λ/NA) in a movement direction relative to the laser beam in an recording layer 12 is continuously regulated. Two or more steps of recording marks 48A to 48G different in state are formed on the virtual recording cells 40 by controlling at least one of irradiation time or irradiation power by two or more steps to irradiate the laser beam. Multilevel recording of information is performed by modulating the light reflectance of the entire part of the virtual recording cells 40 by two or more steps on the basis of the occupancy ratio of the recording marks 48A to 48G to the virtual recording cells 40. |
