PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input and display device capable of selecting whether only a single candidate should be preserved or all candidates should be preserved as for the result of character recognition. SOLUTION: This character input and display device 1 is provided with an input device 11 for inputting a character pattern, a character recognizing device 13 for extracting featured points from the input character pattern, and for selecting corresponding code data as candidates by comparing the extracted featured points with the featured points of a standard character pattern, and for outputting the code data when it is a single candidate, and for outputting any code data when there are a plurality of candidates, and a selecting means for selecting a single preservation mode for preserving only the single code data candidate and a plural preservation mode for preserving all the code data candidates. When the single preservation mode is selected, only the code data being the single code data candidate is stored, and when the plural preservation mode is selected, the code data being all the code data candidates are stored so as to be related with each other.
