PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform adaptive equalization of high precision to equalization error at reproducing operation. SOLUTION: In a step [21], the equalization parameter of an analog waveform equalizer is preset to an initial value. In a step [22], the equalization parameter is deflected to the initial value and values before and after it to obtain evaluation values by a dispersion valueσ<2> . In a step [23], three evaluation values are compared to determine the direction of the smallest value as a climbing direction. In a step [24], the equalization parameter is deflected by one step in the climbing direction. In a step [25], the dispersion valueσ<2> in this state is obtained to determine an evaluation value. In a step [26], this evaluation value is compared with that before change. When the evaluation value before change is smaller, process is returned to the step [24]. When the evaluation value before change is larger, the equalization parameter before change is taken as the optimum equalization parameter in a step [27]. Thus the equalization parameter of the analog waveform equalizer is automatically adjusted.
