PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain high discharge capacity in an alkaline storage battery comprising an electrode body, having a separator interposed between a positive electrode and a negative electrode and an alkaline electrolyte in a battery can by suppressing the swelling of a positive electrode by the intake of the alkaline electrolyte to the positive electrode, when increasing the capacity in the positive electrode. SOLUTION: In this alkaline storage battery comprising the electrode body, having the separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode and the alkaline electrolyte housed in the battery can, the battery comprises a means for suppressing the increase in internal capacity of the battery can. As the capacity increase suppressing means, for example, the alkaline storage battery 30 is retained in a holder 40, and a pressurizing plate 42 is fastened by a screw 41, to maintain a state where the alkaline storage battery being pressurized at a pressure of 10 kgf/cm<2> in the direction for closely fitting the electrode body housed therein.
