PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner, configured as a projection display device that realizes improvement in the screen luminance and reduction of uneven luminance, and to provide an optical scanning method. SOLUTION: The optical scanner is provided with a 1st resonance type galvano mirror scanning a light beam in the scanning line direction and with a 2nd galvano mirror scanning a light beam in a direction perpendicular thereto, and forms an image, by scanning the light beam in two-dimensional manner. A data rearranging means inverts sequence of image information in the unit of pixels, in the scanning line for a scanning forward period and a scanning return period of the 1st galvano mirror and inverts the sequence of image information in the unit of pixels, in the scanning line for a scanning forward period and a scanning return period of the 2nd galvano mirror in units of scanning lines within the image, modulates the light beam synchronously with the scanning state, on the basis of the image information and the image is drawn by the light beam through reciprocating scanning, in the scanning line direction of the forward period and the return period in the vertical direction.
