PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply a reduced resolution image to a digital file system for an individual high resolution image. SOLUTION: An electronic still imaging apparatus is provided with a digital signal processor (22) transforming block of digital image signals obtained from an image sensor (12) into set of coefficient signals and encoding the coefficient signals to the stream of a compressed signal. The digital signal processor (22) generates a reduced resolution image signal from the digital image signal and downloads both the compressed (high resolution) image signal and the reduced resolution image signal to a removable digital storage device (24). In a common multi-format image file, the high resolution images are associated with low resolution images thereof respectively and thereby the image can speedily be accessed. Then, the low resolution observation image can be displayed on a display device (116) without waiting for the expansion and the processing of larger full resolution images.
