PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which does not required reading of an image, even at the occurrence of a 'memory-full' state and the resolution at which no memory-full state is generated, can recognized easily be. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a one-page memory 10 that stores image data by at least one page with no compression and with an image memory 4, having a compression memory 11 that compresses the image data and stores the compressed image data. When the compression memory 11 cannot store image data corresponding to one-page amount, the image data by one page stored in the one-page memory 10 are compressed with lowered resolution, the compressed data are stored in the compression memory 11 and the optimal resolution at which the image data can be stored in the compression memory 11 is notified.
