PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, employing pixel shifting that attains high-speed image read times. SOLUTION: In the image reader employing the pixel shift, a scanner (CCD 13) is made to move at all times, image data (object 1) are captured continuously, a piezoelectric element (A) 11 activates the CCD 13 in the direction of Y pixels, a piezoelectric element (B) 12 activates the CCD 13 in the direction of X pixels, and the image data are read continuously, while shifting the pixels. The read pixel data are sequentially overwritten in a memory (A) 340. At the start of image capturing, the image data having already been captured are used from a memory (B) 250, to accelerate the apparent image read time by the time required to capture advanced read image data.
