PURPOSE: A fluorescent lamp brightness control apparatus is provided to control brightness of lamp in the range of 10 to 20 percent of the maximum dissipation at the state where the ambient temperature is low. CONSTITUTION: A fluorescent lamp brightness control apparatus comprises a power factor compensator circuit(10) operating by the power voltage supplied from a power supply unit(60), and which compensates power factor of the power voltage; a control unit(20) for controlling fluorescent lamp brightness and turn-on/off operation; a resonator circuit(30) for operating fluorescent lamp in accordance with the signal output from the control unit; a lamp operating unit(40) for turning on/off fluorescent lamp by the power supplied from the resonator circuit; a lamp abnormality detection unit(50) for detecting abnormality of fluorescent lamp and outputting a control signal for controlling bias voltage of fluorescent lamp; and a brightness control unit(70) for compensating dimming signal applied from an external source and temperature of fluorescent lamp.
