PURPOSE: A flat panel for a CRT is provided to reduce costs by eliminating the process of grinding an inner surface of a flat panel, while improving characteristics of the CRT. CONSTITUTION: A flat panel(10) for a CRT, comprises an inner surface(13) on which a rail(20) for installation of a shadow mask(30) is installed; an effective surface for displaying images; and a skirt portion(16) formed by bending each side of the effective surface. The skirt portion has a height which is lower than the height of the rail. When the half of length of shorter side effective surface is Ye, center of the inner surface of the flat panel is zero, Z-data at Ye is Zye, and the thickness of the central portion of the flat panel is Ct, radius of curvature(Ryi) of the shorter side is calculated by the formula of (Ye¬2 + Zye¬2)/(2 x Zye). The calculated value is applied to the formula(Ct + (Ryi - (Ryi¬2 - Ye¬2)¬0.5)/Ct), such that the final value falls within the range of 1.01 to 1.15.
