PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a reception side to reproduce the same external character as that at a transmission side, even when a font pattern registered as the external characters at the transmission side is different from that at the reception side. SOLUTION: When it is determined that a transmission destination is put into an environment where there is not any external character, which is the same as that at a transmission origin from a transmission destination address, a transmission destination determining part 14 supplies the character code string of an inputted electronic document to an external character pattern encoding means 15, and the character code string is replaced with a character string by encoding the font pattern of the external character, and transmitted from a transmission part 16 to a communication network 17. A transmission document analyzing part 19 detects whether or not an encoded external character font pattern is included in the character code string of the inputted electronic document; and when an encoded font pattern is included, the font pattern is stored in a temporary font string part 20 as a temporary font pattern. A display control part 21 obtains a character pattern, by replacing the temporary font pattern read from the temporary font pattern storing part 20, and supplies it to a display part 22, and the original electronic document is displayed.
