Heading G1D Apparatus for measuring the temperature of molten metal e.g. in an open hearth furnace 4 comprises a water cooled tube 1 containing a pyrometer 3, a winch 7 for moving the tube 1 into and out of the furnace 4, a device 9 for blowing a gas through the tube and out from an opening 2 in the tube bottom to prevent entry of the molten metal into the tube 1, metering means 12, 13 for measuring the gas pressure in the tube 1 and containing a pair of contacts which are actuated when the pressure reaches a predetermined value signifying that the tube has been lowered to a certain depth in the molten metal, the actuation of the contacts causing the movement of the tube to stop so that a temperature measurement using the pyrometer 3 and meter 14 can be effected. Air from a compressor (not shown) is supplied to the tube 1 via a flow rate stabilizer 11. The metering means 13 contains a micro-switch connected to an electrical control circuit for the winch 7. This device may comprise two concentric discs which are interconnected by a spring to rotate together as pressure rises in the tube 1. When the tube 1 has been lowered to a certain depth into the furnace a limit switch is actuated and this causes a brake to engage one of the discs and prevent further movement. The other disc continues to rotate due to the pressure increase as the tube 1 is lowered into the molten metal until a cam arrangement carried by the discs actuates the above mentioned contacts to stop the lowering of the tube 1. After a predetermined time during which the temperature of the metal is measured the circuit 8 operates to cause the winch 7 to raise the tube 1.</p> |
