In a nuclear reactor electric power generating plant a magnetohydrodynamic generator 17, is supplied with potassium vapour which is ionized by both heat and gamma radiation from the reactor 10. The ionized vapour circulates vertically upwards through the generator, where it is accelerated through nozzles, 20, to a sourrounding water tube condenser 23. The condensed liquid potassium is circulated to the base of the reactor. Each generator nozzle is formed of two opposed magnetic polepieces 25, 26 and two orthogonally disposed collector electrodes. A fast breeder reactor is employed having reservoirs for fission gases. Sodium, caesium, lithium or rubidium may be used in place of potassium.</p> |
