A catalyst composition comprising: a) a cobalt component; and b) an iron component, optionally ligated with a ligand selected from the group consisting of N-heterocycle, phosphine, and porphorine moieties; and a process for preparing 1,3-propanediol from ethylene oxide and syngas using such a catalyst composition.
