The invention relates to a method for producing a decorative film, wherein a laminate is embossed in a first step. The prefabricated laminate is preferably embodied as a laminated strip (17) on a heat-resistant transparent carrier film. One side of the carrier film is coated with a layer of transparent thermoplastic. A reflective layer is disposed on the surface of the thermoplastic layer facing away from the carrier film. Said reflective layer is covered by a thermoplastic protective layer (5) for protecting against mechanical and/or chemical effects. An embossing tool (19) forms a predetermined relief matrix design on the side of the protective layer (5) in the laminate strip (17). The protective layer (5), the reflective layer and the coated layer are plastically deformed. The relief design impressed into the laminate can be recognised through the carrier film.
