The motor (2) driving a dental tool (17) is controlled by a CPU (1). This has reference setting potentiometers (11) for the load exerted by the tool, (12) for the duty factor and (13) for a reference position. A measurement circuit (7) measures the length of a root canal and a resistor (6) acts as a load sensor. Direction of rotation is selected by a switch system (5). The computer provides a visual display (8) of operating conditions with audible indication if the set reference values are exceeded and can switch off the motor transistor switch (3).
