Device comprises sensor which scans scale with which divisions are formed by alternate magnetic poles. Resultant periodic analogue signal is converted into periodic digital signal. Resolution of output signal can be varied using interpolator. This and all electronic circuitry required are mounted in common housing with sensor which itself is no wider than scale. One or more coded reference marks are incorporated in measurement scale.
