The assembly to hold a roll of wound strip material, especially a label supply roll, has a holding core (15) and a holder to retain the roll (3) on the core in a release lock. A further unit gives the roll an axial alignment. A common drive (16,30) operates the holder and axial alignment mechanisms, which are placed together. At least the holding core is exchangeable. A signal automatically operates the holder/alignment system from a sensor, switch or feeler at the winder.
