In the 'float' process for the manufacture of flat glass improved temperature control of the molten glass supported on the bath of molten metal is achieved by controlling the transverse temperature distribution across the bath in a region of the bath where the glass is molten, by inducing transverse flows of molten metal from the centre towards the sides of the bath, said transverse flows of molten metal then being diverted downstream of the bath by the side walls of the tank structure, the resulting flow pattern consisting of two loops extending downstream of the bath. The establishment of closed circulation loops is enhanced by segregating that region of the bath from the rest of the bath, by having a transverse barrier of the type disclosed in Specification 1,123,223, located at the downstream end of the region of the bath supporting the molten glass and by baffle surfaces projecting inwardly into the bath from the tank side walls just upstream of the means causing the transverse flows of molten metal, such segregation preventing molten metal from the cooler parts of the bath entering the region. The enforced circulation of molten metal may be produced in any known manner such as paddle wheels partially immersed in the molten metal, but preferably a pair of linear induction motors is used.
|
