Preparing stably and dynamically immobilized lipid double layers (A) having a defined orientation of the layers on a surface of a solid object. The surface is modified so that it interacts preferentially with only one of the two layers, then (A) deposited on the modified surface. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Immobilized (A) prepared by the new method; (2) Kit for preparing (A); and (3) Investigating proteins (I), especially membrane proteins, that are immobilized in (A).
