A runway light comprises a flat plate 14 having a raised central plateau 16, and an optical system held within a tube 32 and including a lamp 48, a condenser lens system 40, and a bent optical conduit 36 having an entrance window 34 to receive light from the condenser and an exit window 38 disposed outside the tube in the central plateau, a wedgehaped slot 18 (Fig. 1, not shown) being formed in the plate for the passage of the light leaving the conduit. The plate is made of cast metal and may be welded at its edge 24 to the deck 12 of an aircraft carrier, a removable coverplate 58 being provided to protect the end of the conduit. The tube 32 has a flange 56 at its upper end which is seated in rubber gaskets 64 in a counterbore 29 in the plate 14, the conduit 36 being encased in shock absorbent potting material 39 such as silicone rubber. The lamp 48 has a base 68 filled with similar potting material and is releasably held in the bottom of the tube 32 by a screw 72 so that it may be replaced without removing the rest of the optical system.</p> |
