A washing machine is disclosed and includes a rotatably mounted drum (30) for receiving a load of laundry having a pair of end panels (31,32) separated by a tubular side panel (33) and counterbalance means (52a, 52b) arranged to move during rotation of the drum (30) in a pair of annular channels (51a, 51b) fixed relative to the drum (30) concentric therewith on each end panel (31,32), towards a counterbalancing position in response to an imbalance in a load in the drum (30). Each channel (51a,51b) is partially formed from a groove (31a,31b) provided in each end panel (31,32). In an alternative embodiment one of the channels (51a,51b) on each end panel (31,32) is wholly formed from a groove (31a') provided therein and the other channel (51a,51b) provided on each end panel (31,32) is wholly formed from a second groove (53b') provided in a plate member (53) attached thereto. <IMAGE> |
