1,125,077. Cresols. UNION RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLEN KRAFTSTOFF. 19 April, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 17941/87. Heading C2C. Phenol is alkylated by reaction with methanol at 200-240‹ C. in the presence of an aqueous catalyst containing zinc bromide and hydrogen bromide in a proportion of 2À5-10 mols. of water and 0À05-0À5 mol. of hydrogen bromide per mol. of zinc bromide, the proportion of methanol in the reaction mixture being restricted so that the proportion of water specified above is not exceeded on account of water formed in the reaction. The reaction procuct is cooled to a temperature below 130‹ C., whereby an organic phase and an aqueous phase are formed, and cresols are recovered from the organic phase. Products containing o- and p-oresol but substantially free from m-cresol are obtained. An example is given. |
