An aqueous hard surface cleaning composition (I), comprising (by weight) 0.5-6% alkali metal hypochlorite, 0.01-2 wt. % betaine (II), 0.1-2 wt. % alkali metal hydroxide and up to 1 wt. % aromatic sulfonic acid alkali metal salt (as hydrotrope), additionally contains 0.05-1 wt. % amine oxide phosphonic acid (A) and/or its alkali metal salt. An aqueous hard surface cleaning composition (I), comprising (by weight) 0.5-6% alkali metal hypochlorite, 0.01-2 wt. % betaine of formula (II), 0.1-2 wt. % alkali metal hydroxide and up to 1 wt. % aromatic sulfonic acid alkali metal salt (as hydrotrope), additionally contains 0.05-1 wt. % amine oxide phosphonic acid (A) and/or its alkali metal salt. R1 = 6-22C alkyl, 6-22C alkenyl or R4CONH(CH2)n-; R, R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R4 = 6-22C alkyl or 6-22C alkenyl; m = 1-6; n = 1-3. An Independent claim is included for the use of (A) or its salt for increasing the gloss retention of the cleaned surface in the cleaning of hard surfaces using an aqueous solution containing alkali metal hypochlorite, (II) and alkali metal hydroxide.
