Methods are provided for determining susceptibility of a patient to vascular disease according to presence of chlamydia infected with bacteriophage .PHI.Cpn1, and compositions for use in such methods. The compositions includ e bacteriophage .PHI.Cpn1 proteins and nucleic acids, elementary bodies from chlamydia infected with .PHI.Cpn1, and antibodies thereto.
