PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device achieving low power consumption. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is of a simple matrix type, has a liquid crystal display panel 2 loaded on a light transmission plate 1 and is constructed by making a plurality of scanning lines and a plurality of signal lines mutually intersect via a liquid crystal layer. A plurality of LEDs(light emitting diodes) 3a-3j are aligned on an end face of the light transmission plate 1. Besides a location of arrangement is defined by both of the liquid crystal display panel 2 and a backlight so as to make the alignment lines of the LEDs 3a-3j parallel to the signal lines. Furthermore, the LEDs 3a-3j are turned on synchronizing with selection of the scanning lines.
