A fixed-jaw, e.g. Willison, railway vehicle coupler comprises an anti-creep element 9 which is pivoted at 23, 24 to the lock 6 itself pivotable about 15, 16 in the head, and which is gravity-biased at 22 so that when the coupler is coupled (Fig. 4) to a similar coupler, the element surface 51 engages the surface 28 of a look-thrower 8 and the element surface 41 is aligned and engageable with (but normally spaced from) a recess 34 in the rear wall 32 of the coupler to prevent rearward pivoting of the lock 6, the end 29 of the element 9 extending in the lockset condition (Fig. 7) into an opening 36 in the shank of the coupler. On coupling (starting from Fig. 3), the pad 46 of the lock-set piece 10 is engaged by the other coupler and as the piece 10 pivots about 49, a lug 47 on the piece 10 allows the element 9 to pivot to engage the recess 34. Uncoupling is effected by rotation. of the lockthrower 8 by its shaft 7, the thrower 8 initially disengaging the element end 29 downwards from the recess 34, and then engaging the lock surface 53 to rotate the lock, and lifting the piece 10 by means of a lug 54 until the lug 54 engages the rear surface 57 of the piece 10, so that the coupler is in the lock-set condition (Fig. 7), and uncoupling being completed by separating the couplers. The lock-set condition is cancelled by lifting a handle 61.
