PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To distribute a dopant in a method for producing glass suitable for an optical fiber in such a way as to minimize the tendency of non-radiation mutual relaxation. SOLUTION: An optically active component is dissolved in a solvent to prepare a solution. This solution and a powdery substrate are mixed. The powdery substrate is insoluble in the solvent. The solution and powdery substrate are melted and glass is formed in a temperature range in which the viscosity of the resulting melt is <=100,000 P. An optical fiber comprising the glass formed by this method has the optically active component having <=1% unbleachable loss of an absorption peak. |
