PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photoelectric rotary encoder in which a shift in the positional relation between a housing and a pulse disk can be easily and precisely adjusted. SOLUTION: This encoder is provided with the pulse disc 103 provided with a pattern 105m having a ring-like transmission part, and fiexed to a rotary shaft 31a of a motor 30, a reference pattern 107m for photoreceiving light from a light source 101 via the transmission part of the pattern 105m to make the first current flow in response to a photoreceived quantity, a check pattern 107c for photoreceiving the light from the light source 101 via the transmission part of the pattern 105m to make the second current flow in response to a photoreceived quantity, the housing 50 having the light source 101, the reference pattern 107m and the check pattern 107c, provided with an attaching hole 50e having a slight play for inserting a screw member 54 into a tapped hole 30e of the motor 30, and inserted with the pulse disc 103, and a CPU 130 for computing the ratio of the first value based on the first current to the second value based on the second current.
