PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chiral dopant having characteristics such that helical twist power(HTP) is large and the pitch of induced helices becomes short according to a temperature rise. SOLUTION: This optically active compound is represented by general formula (1) [wherein, n is an integer of 1-5; A is selected from a structural formula group consisting of a single bond (-), O, COO, OOC, Cy-COO and OOC-Cy-COO (Cy denotes trans-1,4-cyclohexylene); and C* is asymmetric carbon atom]. Thereby, the chiral dopant having the characteristics such that the HTP is large and the pitch of induced helices becomes short according to the temperature rise is obtained.
