PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air bag device for protecting a knee capable of adequately protecting a knee of a driver by developing and expanding an air bag efficiently with the lapse of time until completion of development and expansion. SOLUTION: The air bag device M1 for protecting the knee includes the air bag 26 folded and housed on a front side of the knee K of the seated driver D beneath a steering column 3. The air bag 26 projects to a vehicle back side HB from a case 19 when inflation gas G flows in and protects the knee K of the driver D. The air bag 26 is provided with a lower expansion part 30 on an upstream side and an upper expansion part 31 on a downstream side of the inflation gas G. The lower expansion part 30 projects to the vehicle back side HB from an opening 17 for projection of the vase 19 and covers a front side of the knee K. The upper expansion part 31 projects upward VU from the lower expansion part 30 so as to abut on a lower surface 8a of a column cover 8, and covers from a peripheral edge of the opening 17 for projection to the vicinity of an upper end 8b on a side of the lower surface 8a of the column cover 8.
