Filaments, yarns, films and other mouldings of polyvinyl alcohol synthetic resins are prepared by moulding a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing from 1 to 15 mole per cent of units having side chains containing long-chain alkyl groups having from 4 to 20 carbon atoms. The resins may be extruded in the absence or presence of a plasticizer. In the Examples (1) vinyl acetate and lauryl vinyl ether are copolymerized in the presence of α,α<SP>1</SP>-azobisisobutyronitrile and methanol, further solvent and catalyst being added during polymerization, and the resultant copolymer is saponified. The modified polyvinyl alcohol is extruded in the presence of magnesium sulphate, glycerine, trimethylol propane, or diethylene glycol. The lauryl vinyl ether may be replaced by stearyl vinyl ether. In Example (6) a polymer obtained by acetalizing polyvinyl alcohol with lauryl aldehyde in the presence of a sulphuric acid catalyst is used. In Example (7) vinyl formate and vinyl stearate are copolymerized and saponified as in (1) and extruded in the presence of glycerine. In Example (8) the polymer of (1) is extruded in the presence of calcium carbonate and trimethylol propane. |
